Tulum's Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport had a successful start, as it was not only inaugurated, but from that day on it began to operate, with good demand for domestic flights, in addition to having international routes scheduled for next year, said David Ortiz Mena, vice president of the Hotel Council of the Mexican Caribbean, who added, however, that what is important and urgent now is to improve mobility to this air terminal, so that it truly helps the destination and the region.

In an interview, the sector leader highlighted that this airport has already exceeded expectations at the start, with several domestic flights, including a connection with Tijuana three times a week, very relevant given that it did not previously have great connectivity with that city, which is a potential source of tourists from Southern California.

“The truth is that (the airport) refreshes the image and puts the name of Tulum on high,” he said. “It has the potential to detonate the South Zone, including Bacalar, in addition to being an option for the Riviera Maya. However, there must be an efficient way to get there and there is a lot to work on.”

For now, there is a shuttle service from the airport to different points in Quintana Roo, but, according to testimonies and photographs that have circulated on social media, the prices are not very competitive, and can even exceed the cost of the plane ticket. There are also cheaper ADO buses, but with only two daily runs.

For David Ortiz Mena, who is also president of the Tulum Hotel Association, in order to have better rates, it is important to make the transfer time more efficient, since currently, to get to the airport, you have to cross Tulum Avenue, which crosses the center of the city. This road was already saturated before the start of the air terminal, and now there is a risk of traffic jams and delays for travelers.

EFFICIENT TRACE

It is expected that when this section of the Maya Train starts, this situation will improve, since it will connect the airport with El Jaguar Park, but it is already necessary to consider creating an alternative road, with an efficient layout, that allows to avoid going through the city center and relieves traffic on Tulum Avenue. So far, there has been talk about it, but there is no specific approved project.

It is important to consider that the accelerated growth of this municipality will be exacerbated by the airport, so it is necessary to anticipate mobility problems, in addition to ensuring that this future development occurs in an orderly manner, without the destination losing its current essence.

"We also have to keep an eye on the housing supply because there will be more jobs and we need these workers to be close to their workplaces," he said.

Currently, housing prices are rising in Tulum, as in many other cities, due to the demand for vacation rentals, which already exceed the total number of available hotel rooms. This shows how urgent it is to regulate this activity, so that this type of accommodation pays the corresponding taxes, and so that it can be proven that these are safe places for tourism.

Finally, David Ortiz Mena applauded the opening of offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs inside the Tulum International Airport, a request made by the hotel association he presides and managed through Governor Mara Lezama, who recently congratulated Ortiz Mena for his successful request.

"The governor's commitment and openness to the tourism sector is evident," said the businessman from Tulum, who believes that these offices will benefit both visitors and locals and could even bring people to the destination in search of passport processing, which will generate economic benefits.
