Two youths were arrested in Playa del Carmen Wednesday for extortion after an area merchant reported them. During routine surveillance along CTM Avenue, police were approached by a barber shop owner who said that he had just been threatened by two people who claimed to be from a criminal organization.
For that reason, he handed over their demand of 5,000 peso in cash. The owner of the barber shop was able to provide a description of the couple who police quickly located still in the area.
After being positively identified by the shop owner, police proceeded to arrest Sergio N and Karla N. A physical search revealed the 5,000 peso in cash the store owner said he had given them. The pair were taken in on charges of extortion.
